Latest Study Finds Widespread Chemical Contamination

New evidence uncovered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that most Americans have absorbed numerous pesticides and toxic substances from consumer products and pollution, resulting in possible health consequences.

With results reported in July 2005, the latest study tested for 148 toxic substances in the blood and urine of about 2,400 individuals aged six and up. CDC director Dr. Julie L. Gerberding said it was “the largest and most comprehensive report of its kind ever released anywhere by anyone.” However, the test addressed only a small percentage of the estimated 80,000 chemicals currently used commercially.

Potentially dangerous compounds found in most test subjects included pyrethroids, synthetic pesticide ingredients that can hurt the nervous system at high doses, and phthalates, which are contained in cosmetics, pills, and soft plastics and have been found to affect reproductive organs and hormones. The study determined that children absorb more contaminants than adults.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “Studies of animals, and in some cases people, suggest that most of the compounds can affect the brain, hormones, reproductive system or the immune system, or that they are linked to cancer.”
